Vol. 21 No. 3

WRITTEN ANSWERS. - UNEMPLOYMENT STATISTICS.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce what is the actual or approximate number of workers in non-insurable occupations in the Free State, and what is the number of unemployed, or the Minister's estimate of such number, among these non-insurable workers.

The number of workers in non-insurable occupations is estimated at 214,000, that being the difference between the number of persons insured against sickness and those insured against unemployment. On 19th September the number of such workers registered as unemployed at the Employment Exchanges was 2,572. I have no other means than regulations of estimating unemployment. The returns to be issued under the forthcoming census of population will include one relating to unemployed persons.
