Vol. 22 No. 2

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - FOWLER ESTATE (CO. LONGFORD).

asked the Minister for Fisheries (a) if he will state the total amount paid for the Fowler Estate, Kilshruley, County Longford; the acreage and average price per acre; the amount granted for making ditches, and the amount expended thereon; whether the making of those ditches was let by private contract, and, if so, for what reason; whether this contract was made by statute measure or Irish measure, and whether the lands were let by statute or Irish measure; (b) whether there is a reserve of bog on this estate; whether it is let yearly and by whom, and what is the yearly income from this letting; what size farm without turbary rights on this estate the Land Commission considers economic; whether turbary was available on this estate, and, if so, whether the tenants received such rights, and if not, for what reason.

This estate of untenanted land, comprising 314 acres, statute measure, was purchased by the Land Commission for £3,900. A sum of £500 was sanctioned for improvements, of which £126 has been expended to date in making internal fences and £180 for fencing off roads, rights of way, etc. All the internal fencing has been done by the allottees. The external fencing has been done by contract in Irish measure, which is the usual practice. The Commissioners considered this the most economical way of carrying out the work.

The new holdings created on this property varied, according to the circumstances of the allottees and the quality of the land, from 14 to 51 acres, statute.
