Vol. 23 No. 11

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - CO. KILDARE UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE CLAIM.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether he will state the reasons for refusing to pay unemployment insurance benefit to John Coffey, Roseberry, Droichead Nua, Co. Kildare, Serial No. 1846, who lodged a claim on the 12th March, 1928, and only received the sum of 7s. 4d. on the 20th April, although he has a considerable number of stamps to his credit; whether Mr. Coffey, with about 50 other men who were sinking holes for electric standards on the Shannon Scheme, in the neighbourhood of Ballyfin, Leix, refused to take on piece-work sinking those holes, but did not strike work; whether they told the manager in charge that they could not earn a week's wages (38s. 3d., at 8½d. per hour, of 54 hours) at the prices offered; whether five men, with a similar number of stamps on their cards, who were working with Mr. Coffey, received the full benefit due to them; and whether he will expedite full payment to Mr. Coffey.

Unemployment benefit was allowed on the claim of John Coffey, of Roseberry, Droichead Nua. Part of this benefit has already been paid, and the balance will be paid to-morrow. There was some delay in paying benefit on the claim owing to the necessity for investigating the circumstances in which the claimant's last employment had terminated, and also to the circumstances that, his benefit year having expired on the 20th March, it was necessary for him to make a fresh claim in order to commence another benefit year before payment of benefit could be resumed.
