Vol. 220 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Boarded-Out Children.

69.

asked the Minister for Health the amount paid by (i) the State and (ii) local authorities in respect of each boarded-out child; and the number of such (a) boys and (b) girls.

Mr. O'Malley

Following is the information requested.

(i) Half of the expenditure by health authorities on boarded-out children is recouped from the Vote for my Department by way of Health Services Grant.

(ii) (a) 728 boys; (b) 542 girls; as at 31st December, 1965.

In addition to maintenance and clothing allowances, health authorities pay school fees for those boarded-out children who, on completion of their primary school education, continue in secondary or vocational schools. They also provide the full range of health services for boarded-out children, free of charge, where the foster parents wish to avail themselves of such services for the children.

The determination of the rates of maintenance and clothing allowances is primarily a matter for the health authorities.

As the remainder of the reply, which relates to the allowances paid by individual health authorities, is in the form of a tabular statement, I propose, with your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, to circulate it with the Official Report.

Following is the statement:
