Vol. 227 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Housing of Retired Army Personnel.

27.

asked the Minister for Local Government whether he will consider allocating ten local authority houses each year to the Minister for Defence for the use of retired members of the Defence Forces, thereby relieving congestion in married quarters in barracks.

The allocation of tenancies of local authority houses is a matter for the housing authority in accordance with scales of preference prescribed in the Housing (Management and Letting) Regulations 1950 and 1953. Retired members of the Defence Forces, in common with other housing applicants, are entitled, in the allocation of houses, to whatever degree of priority their particular circumstances justify in accordance with these Regulations.

Under the Housing Act, 1966, each housing authority is required to draw up a scheme of priorities in the allocation of houses, having regard to the circumstances in their districts. The existing regulations will cease to have effect when such a scheme comes into force in an area. It will be open to authorities in whose areas retired members of the Defence Forces require to be rehoused to make appropriate provision in their new scheme of priorities.
