Vol. 316 No. 9

Written Answers. - Physics Leaving Certificate Paper.

232.

asked the Minister for Education if the 1979 ordinary level physics leaving certificate paper included a question on a topic specifically excluded from the syllabus and the plans, if any, for preventing a repetition of any such occurrence.

In this year's leaving certificate examination paper in physics, ordinary level, candidates had a choice of six questions out of ten. In one of those questions, question 7, there was a choice of two items out of four. Unfortunately one of those items in question 7, item (d) was included in error. In that item candidates were asked how they would measure the internal resistance of a cell. In the syllabus, however, while the internal resistance of a cell is included the measurement of it is reserved for the higher level candidates.

The error was realised at the time of marking the candidates' answers, and the marking scheme was altered accordingly.
