Vol. 350 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Written Answers. - Argina Coalfield.

520.

asked the Minister for Energy if he has any proposals for the utilisation of reserves of inferior grade coal at the Arigna coalfield in the event of it not being required for the generation of electricity there.

The position in regard to the use of the deposits at Arigna known as "Crow" coal is under review. I am not in a position to say what alternative uses, apart from power generation at Arigna, are likely. However every possibility will be fully explored and if the Deputy has a practical suggestion in mind, I will be glad to receive it.

521.

asked the Minister for Energy if he proposes to proceed with the erection of a second coal fired electricity generating station at Arigna; and if he will meet a deputation to discuss this matter.

522.

asked the Minister for Energy if he has arranged a date to meet the deputation as requested by the Arigna coalminers.

A Ceann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 521 and 522 together.

I understand from the ESB that they have deferred the construction of a second coal fired electricity generating station at Arigna, County Roscommon. This is as a result of the board's existing excess generating capacity, the high cost of the project and the poor demand for electricity. In the course of a meeting with a delegation from the area last February, this information was conveyed to the delegation. In these circumstances I do not think that any useful purpose would be served by another such meeting. I have underway a study of the impact of his deferral with a view to proposing possible measures to lessen any adverse effects.
