136 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for Justice the number of motor accidents reported to the Garda in which uninsured drivers were involved; and the total number of accidents reported to the Garda in the most recent year for which figures are available.

137 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for Justice the number of prosecutions for uninsured driving which were initiated by the Garda over the last five years.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 136 and 137 together.

The number of prosecutions initiated for uninsured driving in each of the years 1985 to 1988 is contained in the Garda Commissioner's Report on Crime for those years, copies of which are available in the Library. The Garda authorities report that the corresponding figure for 1989 is currently being compiled.

I am informed by the Garda authorities that records are not maintained of the number of reported motor accidents involving uninsured drivers.
