41 Proinsias De Rossa asked the Minister for the Marine if he will outline the latest position regarding the proposed servicing of Soviet fishing trawlers at Verolme Dockyard, County Cork; and if he will make a statement on the matter.
In the context of a possible co-operation agreement between Ireland and the USSR, the question of servicing Soviet trawlers in Verolme Cork Dockyard was discussed. However, no tangible proposal emerged from these discussions. The prospect of a potential purchaser servicing fishing trawlers on behalf of the USSR is addressed by my officials in negotiations with interested parties.
The continuing objective in relation to Verolme is to dispose of the yard in a way which will result in renewed and increased utilisation of the facility for the employment of Irish people.
