Written Answers. - Re-engagement of Former State Employees.

Ceist:

88 Mr. Barry asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if, since 1989, any former State employees have been engaged, either permanently or on contract, by his Department; and if so, if he will give (i) their names (ii) the terms of their employment or contract (iii) the salary being paid to them and (iv) the pension, if any, payable to them from the State.

A former Irish Permanent Representative to the United Nations has been engaged to act, at a daily fee of £105.00, as Head of the Irish delegation at three "inter-sessional" meetings of the Conference on Security and Co-operation in Europe in the period between April 1989 and June 1990. Each meeting lasts approximately three to four weeks. The officer is in receipt of an annual pension of £25,137.

Following his retirement, a former Irish Ambassador in Tokyo was engaged to retain his post as Ambassador to Japan for the period from 11 January to 23 August 1989. The officer, who was paid a daily fee of £93.42, is in receipt of an annual pension of £23,208.
