Vol. 399 No. 1

Written Answers. - Youthreach Programmes.

Richard Bruton

Ceist:

26 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for Labour the provisions that have been made for job placement of persons on Youthreach programmes; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am not clear if the Deputy is referring to job placement or work experience for Youthreach participants or to placement of Youthreach participants in jobs following participation in the programme.

Work experience/job placement is an integral part of Youthreach particularly in the progression year with participants themselves seeking out placements with local employers.

Over 3,200 young people participated on Youthreach in 1989 of whom some 1,400 have left the programme to date. While the current status of these young people has not been surveyed to date, there are indications that many of them obtained employment.

FÁS hope to pilot a specially designed six months training module on Youthreach to be delivered through employment based training on employers premises from July with a target of 500 places in 1990. The objective is to provide a structured introduction to the work place for Youthreach participants.
