Vol. 409 No. 6

Written Answers. - Polling Staff.

Richard Bruton

Ceist:

55 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for the Environment if his attention has been drawn to the fact that frequently polling clerks are unable to vote in elections which they are supervising; and if he intends introducing proposals to remedy this situation.

Under existing law, where an elector is employed by a returning officer for any purpose in connection with an election and the circumstances of the elector's employment are in the opinion of the returning officer such as to prevent the person from voting at the normal polling station, the returning officer may authorise in writing the elector to vote at another polling station within the constituency, in the case of Dáil elections or referenda, within the county borough, in the case of European Parliament elections, or within the local electoral area, in the case of local elections.

In the Electoral Bill, 1991, provision is made for the amendment of the Presidential Elections Act, 1937, to provide for a similar arrangement in relation to electors employed by a local returning officer at a presidential election.
