Vol. 415 No. 4

Written Answers. - Southern Health Board Redundancies.

Michael Moynihan

Ceist:

175 Mr. Moynihan asked the Minister for Health if she has been advised by the Southern Health Board that they are prepared to lay-off 150 temporary staff; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

In December 1991, the approved employment ceiling for the Southern Health Board was 6,340 which represented an increase of 266 over the corresponding December 1988 approved employment ceiling. The increase arose as a result of various approved service developments.

During the course of my recent meetings in January with each of the health boards, I underlined the imperative of managing services within the employment and financial constraints which apply. Employment control, of course, represents a key aspect of overall financial management. Over the coming months my Department will be closely monitoring compliance with the employment and financial parameters.
