Vol. 431 No. 6

Written Answers. - Civil Legal Aid.

Jim O'Keeffe

Ceist:

27 Mr. J. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for Equality and Law Reform whether he has satisfied himself that there is equality of access to Legal Aid Centres for those living in rural areas; and, if not, the plans, if any, he has to remedy the situation.

Helen Keogh

Ceist:

29 Ms Keogh asked the Minister for Equality and Law Reform the action, if any, he intends to take to ensure that those citizens who are entitled to civil legal aid are provided with it without having to wait for up to 12 months before they get an appointment; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Martin Cullen

Ceist:

34 Mr. Cullen asked the Minister for Equality and Law Reform if he will alter the present means test limit for civil legal aid; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 27, 29 and 34 together.

As I have already mentioned in the House today, I said on 28 April last when replying to parliamentary questions, that the additional £100,000 allocation in 1993 would be used to employ the services of private solicitors thus reducing the length of the waiting lists at the various law centres.

On that same occasion I gave a commitment that I will continue to devote my best endeavours to achieve a significant and lasting improvement in the scheme of civil legal aid and advice. It was, and is my intention that the benefits from this improvement would accrue equally in both rural and urban areas. I intend to honour that commitment.
The eligibility requirements for legal aid are being kept under continuous review and will be amended as the need arises.
