Vol. 471 No. 7

Written Answers. - Public Record Files.

Trevor Sargent

Ceist:

374 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for Enterprise and Employment the whereabouts of files relating to the Geesala Agricultural Co-Operative Bank Limited and the Glenhest Agriculture Co-Operative Bank Limited, both of which are listed as being registered with the Registrar of Friendly Societies and both of which are recorded as being in liquidation; whether he is open to offers for the purchase of these two licensed banks; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [21926/96]

Geesala Agricultural Bank and Glenhest Agricultural Bank, are societies which were registered under the Friendly Societies Act, 1896. Geesala Agricultural Bank was registered on 15 November 1898 and was wound up by Order of the Circuit Court on 14 November 1933. The final winding-up is believed to have been effected by an order of the Circuit Court made on 23 April 1945. Glenhest Agricultural Bank was registered on 19 May 1901 and is believed to have been wound up by order of the Circuit Court made on 1 May 1934. The winding-up of Glenhest is believed to have been completed in 1938. Since the dates of winding-up, these societies have ceased to exist, and consequently the question of their purchase does not arise.

The above information has been obtained from correspondence files in the Registry of Friendly Societies. However, despite a thorough search of the Registry and the National Archives it has not been possible to trace the public record files of either society. While this is a matter of regret for the Registrar, it appears that the files have not been in the Registry for a considerable time. Having regard to the fact that each society ceased to exist more than 50 years ago, the Registrar believes that there is little point in undertaking any further searches of his office.
