Vol. 503 No. 3

Written Answers. - Special Educational Needs.

Ceist:

556 Mr. Hayes asked the Minister for Education and Science the progress, if any, made in respect of the appointment of ten additional teachers within the Dublin area to help children overcome difficulties with the English language; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [9710/99]

In February of this year, a total of 13 teachers were allocated to 19 Dublin schools. Of these 19 schools, eight schools were each allocated a full teaching post, while the remaining 11 schools will share the services of the remaining five teachers as allocated by my Department officials.

The allocation of these teachers is based on assessments of needs within the individual schools and will be reviewed from time to time. It is intended to develop benchmarks to assist in the determination of greatest need for the purposes of future annual reviews.
