Vol. 510 No. 1

Written Answers. - Millennium Projects.

Richard Bruton

Ceist:

67 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Taoiseach the reason for the long delay in making an allocation to the community project to celebrate the millennium in spite of the months which have elapsed since submissions were first invited; and if his attention has been drawn to the fact that with the millennium only nine weeks away some of the necessary preparation inherent to these projects is being compromised by the delay. [21908/99]

Millennium funding for locally based projects was made available under two initiatives, the millennium recognition awards and the millennium events awards.

The millennium recognition awards, which were advertised at the end of May of this year with a closing date of 9 July, were administered on behalf of the national millennium committee by Area Development Management Limited and had a total allocation of £2 million. The awards attracted a huge response with nearly 1,400 applications made. Despite the large number of applications, the assessment process was done speedily and recommendations on 106 projects for the awards were made to the national millennium committee by mid-October. The awards were duly announced over last weekend.

The millennium events awards, with a total allocation of £3 million, were launched in mid- September and the closing date for applications was 22 October. This initiative is being administered by local authorities and I expect that their recommendations will be submitted to the national millennium committee for consideration shortly.
It should be noted that the overall aim of the national millennium committee is to create a programme of projects and events over the period 1999 and 2000 and that this is reflected in both awards initiatives.
