Vol. 557 No. 1

Written Answers. - Road Traffic Offences.

Michael Ring

Ceist:

375 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Transport if the Taoiseach's car and ministerial cars are exempt from penalty points; and if a State car is found to have broken the speed limit, is it the driver or the State who is responsible for the fine and points or are they entirely exempt from this legislation. [21137/02]

Penalty points apply to speeding offences since 31 October, 2002. Where a driver is convicted of an offence of exceeding the speed limit or pays a fixed charge, the appropriate number of penalty points will be endorsed on the driver's licence record.

Regulations made under the Road Traffic Acts relating to speed limits provide that vehicles being used by members of the Garda Síochána in the performance of their duties, ambulances and fire brigades are exempt from certain speed limits. There are no exemptions applied in respect of the motorway speed limit.
