Cathaoirleach of Seanad Éireann extends greetings to Greece on its National Independence Day

25 Márta 2021, 10:00

The Cathaoirleach of Seanad Éireann, Senator Mark Daly, has extended greetings and good wishes to Greece on the 200th anniversary of its National Independence Day, Thursday, 25 March 2021.

Speaking in the Seanad the Cathaoirleach said: “We are all grateful to the People of Greece, for their country’s contribution to the world, for giving us, the idea, the meaning and in fact the very word democracy. This year Greece is celebrating two hundred years since the start of Greek Revolution in 1821 which led to its Independence.

“Among those who fought in Greece’s war of independence was General Richard Church, from Cork.  He was commander of the Greek Army during the latter stages of the war, he became a Greek citizen, a Senator and member of the Greek Council of State. 2021 also marks the 40th anniversary of Greece’s accession to the EU and the 45th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Ireland and Greece. In this important year for the people of Greece, we wish Ambassador Simopoulou and the Greek community in Ireland and all over the world a very Happy Independence Day.”
