Joint Committee on Transport and Communications to meet to discuss the need for reform of public works contracts for the construction of transport infrastructure

26 Aib 2022, 16:52

The Joint Committee on Transport and Communications will meet tomorrow, Wednesday, 27 April, to discuss the need for reform of public works contracts for the construction of transport infrastructure at 13:30 in Committee Room 2 of Leinster House. This hearing comes on foot of the recent appearance of TII (Transport Infrastructure Ireland) before the Committee where they called for such reform.

Committee Chair, Deputy Kieran O’Donnell TD stated that “TII has recently appeared before the Transport committee, highlighting that the NDP (National Development Plan) is facing significant and systemic threats. Furthermore, Peter Walsh CEO TII asked that reform of the public works contracts should be considered to reduce the risk on major road projects, with rising inflation creating the most pressing circumstances for such reform.”

The meeting will be in 2 sessions with submissions heard from:

Session 1

·       Officials from the Department of Transport:

·       Ms. Ethna Brogan, Assistant Secretary

·       Mr. Andrew Ebrill, Principal Officer

·       Mr. Dominic Mullaney, Principal Adviser Roads

Session 2

·       Tom Parlon – Director General of the Construction Industry Federation (CIF)

·       Paul Sheridan – Director of the Construction Industry Federation (CIF)

The meeting in Committee Room 2 can be viewed live on Oireachtas TV.

The Joint Committee on Transport and Communications  has 14 Members, nine from the Dáil and five from the Seanad.
