The Joint Committee on Transport and Communications will meet with Transport Infrastructure Ireland’s Chief Executive Officer, Mr Peter Walsh tomorrow, Tuesday, 29th November, to discuss the reported increase in motorway toll charges from January 2023 at 7pm in Committee Room 2 of Leinster House.
Committee Cathaoirleach Deputy Kieran O’Donnell TD said: “the meeting tomorrow will allow our Committee to directly engage with the State roads operator, Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) to ascertain what criteria was used to inform the decision taken to increase motorway toll charges in January, a move that will see additional increased pressures on commuters and businesses during the on-going cost-of-living crisis.
We will confirm with Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) that the State and the public-private partnership companies still have “discretion” in the setting the tolls. We will reiterate the understanding that these companies are restricted from increasing the tolls beyond inflation and that they do not have to match rising consumer prices.
The Transport Committee will continue to engage with all stakeholders involved on this national issue”.
The meeting in Committee Room 2 can be viewed live on Oireachtas TV.
The Joint Committee on Transport and Communications has 14 Members, nine from the Dáil and five from the Seanad.
Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
