Joint Committee in European Affairs to meet for discussion on the Windsor Framework

1 DFómh 2024, 15:09

The following representatives are due to appear:

Paul Lynam, Deputy Director General, British Irish Chamber of Commerce
Aidan Finnegan, Director of Policy and Advocacy, British Irish Chamber of Commerce
Patrick Donohoe, Chief Corporate Affairs Officer, Lakeland Dairies
Carol Lynch, Partner, BDO, Customs and Trade

Speaking ahead of the meeting, Committee Cathaoirleach Deputy Colm Brophy said: “We welcome the opportunity to discuss the Windsor Framework and its impact on businesses across Ireland with representatives from the British Irish Chamber of Commerce.

The Windsor Framework is a legal agreement reached last year between the European Union and the UK to ease the trading issues created by the Northern Ireland Protocol following Brexit.

The British Irish Chamber of Commerce works to champion, protect and grow the trade between the UK and Ireland – a trade is worth more than €100 billion a year and sustains over 600,000 jobs.

Prior to the adoption of the Windsor Framework, the Chamber highlighted members concerns in relation to the then Northern Ireland Protocol and stated that specific arrangements for Northern Ireland were always needed to ensure that no physical border on the island of Ireland would be erected for customs purposes.

As a result of the Windsor Framework, there has been no discernible changes in moving goods between Ireland and Northern Ireland. The stabilisation in the trade relationship between Ireland and the UK has been further enhanced by the new Government in the UK and we look forward to discussing the opportunities the framework represents.”
