Decriminalisation of homosexuality - 25th anniversary

26 Jun 2018, 13.01

Senator David Norris speaking in Seanad Éireann

On 19 June, the Houses of the Oireachtas marked the 25th anniversary of the decriminalisation of homosexuality. Motions were debated in the Dáil and Seanad and an apology was given for the harm caused to people by the laws repealed in 1993.

The Criminal Law (Sexual Offences) Bill 1993 passed Final Stage in the Seanad on 30 June 1993 and was enacted on 7 July. The Bill was sponsored by the then Minister for Justice Máire Geoghegan-Quinn, who was the second woman to serve as an Irish Government Minister.
