Joint Committee on the Implementation of the Good Friday Agreement welcomes final reports by the Independent Monitoring Commission (IMC) and the Independent International Commission on Decommissioning (IICD)

Dominic Hannigan, TD, Chairman of the Joint Committee on the Implementation of the Good Friday Agreement, said: “These two organisations were set up to assist the decommissioning of paramilitary weapons, monitor paramilitary violence and the transition to a peaceful society and stable government in Northern Ireland. Since they were set up they have, working independently of both Governments, helped Northern Ireland to make the transition from violence and discord to a more stable and peaceful society.

Each undertook a very onerous and difficult task and, on behalf of the Joint Committee, I would like to thank all of those on each Commission for their efforts over the years. While the IMC report highlights that some threats remain in particular for members of the PSNI, this must be set in the context of the huge progress achieved over the past number of years. The trusted and independent work of the IMC and IICD has helped all those who continue to work to further peace and reconciliation in Northerm Ireland.

I would hope that members of both Commissions and also the Minister for Justice and Equality Alan Shatter, TD will attend a future meeting of the Joint Committee to discuss their findings.”
