Peadar Tóibín, TD elected Cathaoirleach of the Oireachtas Committee on Investigations, Oversight and Petitions

Speaking after his election, Deputy Tóibín said: “It is a great honour for me to have been elected Cathaoirleach of the Committee on Investigations, Oversight and Petitions. This Committee will provide strong oversight of the many important matters that will come before us as we move forward with our work programme. At a time of scarce resources, it is critical that the Oireachtas exercises its authority to ensure the delivery of responsive public services to the people who need them. This Committee will be at the forefront of this effort.

We have also been given the ambitious task to chart a course for a petitions system in the Houses of the Oireachtas. A parliamentary petitions system will present an important new avenue for individuals to participate in the democratic process. This is an historic opportunity. For the first time, through the petitions process, members of the public will be able to take their policy concerns directly to the heart of Parliament and to influence the parliamentary agenda.

Our Committee will be at the centre of this process. Together with Leas-Chathaoirleach Deputy Michael McCarthy and all committee members we will work to create a Parliament that is truly accessible and accountable to the Irish People. 

Michael McCarthy, TD was elected Leas-Chathaoirleach of the Committee.

Deputy McCarthy said: “Oireachtas Committees have a strong tradition of being non-partisan and inclusive and I am confident that this committee will continue this practice and, in a genuine spirit of partnership and co-operation, make a meaningful contribution to addressing matters of public concern. I look forward to working with Chairman Deputy Peadar Tóibín and our colleagues on the Committee to ensure it fulfils this important remit.”
