11 July 2011 The President of the European Parliament, His Excellency Jerzy Buzek will make an address to Seanad Éireann and the Oireachtas Committee on EU Affairs when he visits Leinster House tomorrow, (12th).
This is Mr Buzek’s first official visit to Ireland since he assumed the position. During his visit to Leinster House he will also meet with the Ceann Comhairle, Seán Barrett TD and Cathaoirleach of Seanad Éireann, Senator Paddy Burke.
In his discussions, with the Ceann Comhairle and the Cathaoirleach and during his address to Seanad Éireann and the EU Affairs Committee, Mr Buzek is expected to focus on Irish-EU relations, the EU-Irish economic situation, Lisbon Treaty changes and the role of national parliaments.
Ceann Comhairle, Seán Barrett TD said;
“Ireland’s relationship with the EU is of crucial significance at the moment. The European Parliament and its President play a central role in this and I am looking forward to welcoming him to Leinster House.
I am keen to hear his views on the responsibility of national parliaments during the present economic situation and his opinions on how the Lisbon Treaty has developed this.”
Cathaoirleach of the Seanad, Senator Paddy Burke said;
“It is an honour that President Buzek has agreed to address Seanad Éireann. He is somebody with a thorough understanding of the challenges facing the EU at present and we are looking forward to hearing what he thinks needs to be done to overcome them.
