Oireachtas Committee to Consider Revised Dublin Transport Strategy with Transport Authority Bosses

25 Iúil 2011, 17:27

The updated Greater Dublin Area Transport Strategy 2011-2030 will be analysed at tomorrow’s (26th) meeting of the Oireachtas Environment, Transport Culture and the Gaeltacht Committee at 2:30 pm in Committee Room 2 of Leinster House.

25 July 2011

Senior officials from the National Transport Authority (NTA) will attend the Committee to outline to members the plans contained in the Strategy and any changes made since it was opened to public consultation earlier this year.

The original strategy contained significant plans for Dublin’s transport infrastructure including:
Implementation of both Metro North and Metro West;
A new Luas line from Lucan to the city centre and extending the Luas Green Line to Bray;
Dart Underground;
An additional rail track between Balbriggin and Connolly, Cherry Orchard and Inchicore;
Further development of smart card technology;
Transition to an integrated zone based fare system;

Committee Chairman, Ciaran Lynch TD said
“The plans announced by the National Transport Authority for upgrading transport infrastructure in the greater Dublin area are extremely ambitious. It recommends some major capital projects throughout the city during the coming years.

At tomorrow’s meeting we will be keen to determine the current status of these plans considering the present straitened times. We will be examining the costs of some of these projects including Metro North to ascertain whether they are viable financially and environmentally.”

The officials from the NTA who will attend are; Mr Hugh Creegan, Deputy CEO, Ms Anne Graham, Director Public Transport Services and Mr Jeremy Ryan, Transport Strategy Project Manager.

Prior to its meeting with the NTA, the Committee will meet with the Chairman designate of the National Concert Hall, Mr Kieran Tobin. This is a continuation of the Committee’s role of engaging with nominees to Chair to State bodies.
