Minister Noonan First to Appear at Finance Meeting as Committee Begins Extensive Consultation Process

1 MFómh 2011, 10:04

Central Bank Governor and Financial Regulator before Friday’s Session

31st Aug 2011

The Oireachtas Committee on Finance and Public Service will kick off its series of intensive consultative meetings tomorrow, (1st) when the Minister for Finance, Michael Noonan TD appears before the Committee at 10 am in Committee Room 2 of Leinster House.

The Committee is holding a sequence of meetings with the main players in the field of domestic and European finance. The purpose of these sessions is to give the members of the Joint Committee an overview of the major issues that are facing the Irish economy and the banking sector within the context of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the EU/IMF/ECB, and bank recapitalisation and credit provision.

On Friday, (2nd) it will be the turn of the Governor of the Central Bank, Professor Patrick Honohan and Deputy Governor Matthew Elderfield to attend the Committee.
Committee Chairman, Alex White TD said:

“Tomorrow’s meeting will enable the Committee to question the Minister for Finance. It will also give members an opportunity to put some of their own suggestions to Minister Noonan.

We will also be able to ask the Minister, the Governor and the Deputy Governor their views on some of the most pressing financial issues facing the country, including credit provision and debt resolution.

However, the primary purpose of this series of meetings is that the members of the Joint Committee get an overview of the major issues facing the economy, so that members can focus on the specific areas it wishes to pursue as part of its Work Programme to the end of 2011.

I believe it is extremely useful for there to be an open public forum where these matters can be aired, and where differing viewpoints can be debated. It will enhance public understanding and ultimately lead to better policy.”

Over the coming weeks, the Committee will be conducting a rigorous consultation process. It has secured the agreement from the heads of NAMA, the NTMA, BOI and AIB to attend the Committee. The Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform, Brendan Howlin TD and EU Commissioner for Economic and Monetary Affairs, Ollie Rehn will also attend upcoming meetings
