Finance Committee to meet with Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform

12 MFómh 2011, 15:44

The Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance and the Public Service will continue its overview of the issues facing the economy and the banking system tomorrow, Tuesday 13th September when it will meet with Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform, Brendan Howlin TD.

Committee Chairman, Alex White TD said: “The primary purpose of our current series of meetings is that the members of the Joint Committee get an overview of the major issues facing the economy. Therefore, this meeting with the Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform is opportune and timely. Reform of our public services and how we spend the taxpayers’ money to receive the best service at the best price will be a key element in helping to restore our national finances to a healthy and sustainable state.

This meeting will provide the Minister with an opportunity to outline his visions for the public service and update the Committee on the work his Department has carried out in this area to help improve Ireland’s financial and economic fortunes.

It will also provide Committee Members with an opportunity to question the Minister and raise any issues they may have in relation to public expenditure and reform.

The Committee will continue its rigorous consultation process this week with all the main players in the fields of finance and economics. On Wednesday, 14th September, David Hodgkinson, Chairman of Allied Irish Bank, and Richie Boucher, Group Chief Executive of Bank of Ireland, will appear before the Committee, while Alan Dukes, Chairman of Anglo Irish Bank, and John McGloughlin, Chief Financial Officer with Irish Nationwide Building Society, will meet with the Committee on Thursday, 15th September.

This meeting with Minister Howlin will take place tomorrow in Committee Room 4, Leinster House 2000 at 4pm on Tuesday, 13th September, while the remaining meetings will take place in Committee Room 4 at 2pm on Wednesday and Thursday respectively.
