Committee on Jobs, Social Protection and Education to discuss job creation and business start-up schemes

13 MFómh 2011, 17:34

The Committee on Jobs, Social Protection and Education will discuss current and future proposals for job creation and business start-up schemes, as well as budgetary reform of the County Enterprise Boards with officials from the Department of Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation, the Industrial Development Authority and Enterprise Ireland at its meeting tomorrow, Wednesday, 14th September.

Chairman of the Committee Deputy Damien English said: “Hundreds of thousands of people in this country have lost their jobs in the recession that followed the banking collapse and property crash. With the unemployment rate reaching nearly 15 per cent, the creation of jobs and the promotion of enterprise is probably the greatest issue facing the country today.

This Committee has a key role to play in providing a meaningful input into legislation and policy and informing debate on the creation and retention of jobs and promoting and supporting enterprise and innovation.

Therefore, it is important that we hear first hand about all current and future proposals on job creation and business start-up schemes. County Enterprise Boards (CEBs) will play an important part in promoting enterprise and business start-ups throughout the country, so it is essential that in any budgetary reform, CEBs will have sufficient funds and expertise to provide both financial and non-financial assistance to an eligible micro-enterprise.

Our meeting tomorrow with officials from the Department of Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation, Enterprise Ireland and the IDA will provide members of the committee with an update on current and future proposals for business start-up schemes and job creation programmes. It will also allow Committee Members to raise any issues or concerns they may have in relation to job creation and enterprise development schemes, as well as the budgetary reform of the County Enterprise Boards.”

This meeting will take place on Wednesday, 14th September, in Committee Room 3, Leinster House 2000 at 9.30am.
