Committee on European Union Affairs to discuss priorities for EU Presidency and EU Financial Stability measures

14 MFómh 2011, 15:44

The Ambassadors of Poland, Denmark and Cyprus will appear before the Oireachtas Joint Committee on European Union Affairs tomorrow, September 15th, to discuss priorities of the 18-month Presidency Programme of Poland, Denmark and Cyprus.

Secretary General of the Department of Finance, Kevin Cardiff, will also address the Committee on financial measures agreed by the Council of the European Union on 21st July 2011.

Joe Costello, TD, Chairman of the Committee on European Union Affairs, said:  “It is ever more important that the policies emanating from the European Union are properly examined and that this Committee fully utilises its opportunities for engagement with the EU institutions to monitor and influence the political and strategic direction of the Union as a whole in the coming years.

In our work programme, we identified the priorities of the EU Presidency and economic recovery as key issues to be addressed. Therefore, I’m delighted that H.E Marcin Nawrot, Ambassador of Poland, H.E. Niels Pultz, Ambassador of Denmark and H.E. Dr. M. Stavrinos, Ambassador of Cyprus, will appear before the Committee tomorrow. It is important that we get the views and input of the key players in the EU as we seek to address the many issues and challenges faced by the EU and its member countries.

In addition, Kevin Cardiff, Secretary General of the Department of Finance will attend the Committee meeting to discuss financial measures agreed by the Council of the European Union on 21st July. Economic and financial stability in Europe will be a key element to an Irish recovery, so it is important we get an in-depth briefing on the course of action agreed by EU leaders and what it means for Ireland in particular and Europe in general. Members of the committee will have an opportunity to ask any questions or raise any issues or concerns they may have in relation to the measures announced by the Council of the European Union last July in relation to dealing with the sovereign debt crisis in Europe.”

The Committee will also discuss the Middle East Peace Process with officials from the Department of Foreign Affairs.

The Committee will meet at 11.30am on Thursday, 15th September, in Committee Room 3, Leinster House 2000.
