Committee on Environment, Transport, Culture and the Gaeltacht to discuss issues of the supply, storage and disposal of water with city and county councils

26 MFómh 2011, 13:50

Representatives from Cork City; Donegal County; Dublin City and Galway County Councils will appear before the Committee on Environment, Transport, Culture and the Gaeltacht to discuss issues surrounding the supply, storage and disposal of water.

Among the key issues which will be addressed at tomorrow’s meeting are:

 providing an efficient infrastructure;
 administration and administration costs;
 alternative sources.

Committee Chairman Ciarán Lynch, TD said: “The Committee signalled its intent to focus on water supply, storage and disposal as part of its work programme. Tomorrow’s meeting is the first in a series of meetings to address this issue and we are looking forward to getting the views of Cork City; Donegal County; Dublin City and Galway County Councils.

Water supply is a priority issue in this country. There is no doubt that there is a pending problem with water supply in the greater Dublin area in particular, while nationwide we have experienced disruption to water supplies during winter cold snaps or shortages during the summer. On top of this, there is also the situation where vast quantities of water are lost through leakages in the system.

Our first meeting on the issue will provide representatives from Cork City; Donegal County; Dublin City and Galway County Councils with an opportunity to outline the situation in their regions and Committee members will be have a chance to raise any issues and concerns they may have in relation to water supply, storage and conservation.”

This meeting will take place on Tuesday, 26th September, in Committee Room 4, Leinster House 2000 at 2.30pm.
