Reform of the third level entrance system, matching skills between industry and third level and job opportunities in the internet and gaming industries to be discussed by Committee on Jobs, Social Protection and Education

3 DFómh 2011, 16:19

Reform of the third level entrance system, the need to ensure there is a better skills match between industry needs and third level graduates and job opportunities in the internet and interactive computer gaming industry will be discussed at meeting of the Committee on Jobs, Social Protection and Education at its meeting tomorrow, Tuesday, 4th October.

Chairman of the Committee Deputy Damien English said: “Despite the economic downturn and high unemployment, some sectors, particularly in the high tech area have said that they are having problems filling certain positions and have highlighted what they say is a mismatch between what industry wants and what the education system is producing. In particular, the computer gaming and internet industries have emphasised that they are finding it difficult to hire suitably qualified people.

Representatives from Irish Universities Association, the Institutes of Technology Ireland and the computer gaming and internet industries will appear before the Committee to discuss the need to ensure there is a better skills match between industry needs and third level graduates.”

This meeting will take place on Tuesday, 4th October, in Committee Room 2, Leinster House 2000 at 2pm.
