Health Committee continues its examination of the effects of alcohol marketing on Young People

9 Samh 2011, 17:36

The Committee on Health and Children will continue to examine and discuss alcohol marketing and its effects on young people at its meeing tomorrow, Thursday, 10th November at t 11.30 am in Leinster House.

The Committee will be briefed by representatives from the Alcohol Beverage Federation of Ireland (ABFI), Vintners’ Federation of Ireland (VFI) and Alcohol Action Ireland.

Chairman of the Committee on Health and Children, Jerry Buttimer, TD said: \"I look forward to hearing from two of the main representative organisations involved in the alcohol industry in Ireland.  Their views and sentiments will form a central part in any solution to the problems of alcohol abuse in our young people.  I am particularly disturbed with some of the findings contained in two new reports on alcohol abuse which have shown that the treatment of alcohol abuse in young people has risen by more than 145 per cent in five years.  The marketing and sales techniques used together with the low cost pricing of alcohol must all be put in the spotlight when trying to resolve this problem.

Tomorrow’s meeting also provides the Committee with an opportunity to meet with one of the national charities who are to the fore in their attempts to highlight the human costs for children and young people who are affected by alcohol abuse in their everyday lives.”

The Committee will meet at 11.30 am on Thursday, 10th November, in Committee Room 2, Leinster House 2000.
