Oireachtas Agriculture Committee meets with Northern Ireland Assembly Committee on Agriculture and Rural Development

15 Samh 2011, 18:14

Members of the Committee on Communications, Natural Resources and Agriculture travelled to the Northern Ireland Assembly at Stormont today (Tuesday) to meet with their counterparts on the Assembly’s Committee on Agriculture and Rural Development.

The two Committees had an opportunity to discuss issues of common concern that included, animal health, the EU’s Common Agriculture Policy (CAP) and Common Fisheries Policy (CFP).

Speaking after the meeting, Chairman of the Oireachtas Committee, Andrew Doyle, TD said:  “Paul Frew, MLA, Committee Chairperson of the Assembly’s Committee for Agriculture and Rural Development and I first discussed the idea of our Committees meeting-up when the two of us attended the National Ploughing Championships (NPC) in Athy, County Kildare in September last.  I and my fellow colleagues found our discussions today very beneficial and informative.

I look forward to continuing to develop a good working relationship with our colleagues in the Assembly on issues that are of mutual concern to farming and fishing families on this island.”

Paul Frew, MLA said: “We welcome the opportunity to discuss key issues with our counterparts from the Republic of Ireland.  Meeting with the Members of the Oireachtas today has been extremely useful, allowing us to highlight mutual concerns, share ideas and discuss possible solutions.  It’s important that the lines of communication between both Committees are maintained to help achieve the best possible outcome for farmers, fishermen and the wider rural community.”

The Committee also had an opportunity to meet with the Speaker of the Northern Ireland Assembly, Mr. William Hey, MLA.
