Committee on Health and Children meets to discuss Child Poverty

18 Samh 2011, 17:18

The Committee on Health and Children today, Friday, 18h November met with representatives of Social Justice Ireland and the End Child Poverty Coalition, a partnership of eight national non-governmental organisations to discuss the issue to Child Poverty.

Chairman of the Committee on Health and Children, Jerry Buttimer, TD said: \"Today’s meeting provided an important space for this issue to the discussed and debated.  There were many views and counter views expressed on this important issue but the overriding ambition for all of us is the ultimate eradication of child poverty in Ireland today.

I agree that there is a need for system reforms in this area.  Improvements, if put in place would bring immediate benefits for those young people caught in difficult circumstances.  The rights of children are an absolute priority for all of us and I am hopeful that we can work in a positive and non-partisan way to ensure that our children receive the childhood they deserve.”
