Foreign Affairs Committee statement on death of Václav Havel

19 Noll 2011, 16:47

The Oireachtas Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade has written to the Czech ambassador to express its condolences on the death of former Czech President Václav Havel.

Committee Chairman, Pat Breen TD said: “Former President Havel had an influence beyond the borders of his homeland. He was an inspiration to many for his principled and peaceful stand against authoritarianism and, even in the years after his term of office, was highly respected for his steadfast commitment to human rights and democracy throughout the world. Through both his political actions and his writings, he inspired a generation across Europe. His State Visit to Ireland in 1996 is remembered fondly by many. He will be sadly missed by his many friends here and across the world.”
