Committee on Environment, Transport, Culture and the Gaeltacht to meet the Save Moore Street campaigners

20 Márta 2012, 17:30

The Joint Oireachtas Committee on Environment, Transport, Culture and the Gaeltacht will tomorrow meet with representatives of the Save the Moore Street Group. The group is campaigning to save a section of the famous street of historical relevance to the 1916 Rising.

Committee Cathaoirleach Ciarán Lynch, TD said: “As the centenary of the 1916 Rising approaches, our Committee tomorrow have the opportunity to hear first-hand from those at the forefront of a campaign to save an area of great significance during the rebellion.

“The campaign centres on saving number 16 on the iconic street, where Rising leaders agreed to surrender. Those leaders included a wounded James Connolly and Committee Members look forward in particular to hearing the views of his great grandson, James Connolly Heron. The group advocate that the significant building becomes a museum, with its interior be preserved in its original state. The Committee looks forward to exploring with the representatives how this area of Dublin can be developed in a balanced manner that respects the historical significance of the site.

The Committee will tomorrow be presented with a statement, signed by relatives of the seven signatories of the 1916 Proclamation, requesting the area’s preservation.”

The Committee will also meet with the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport Leo Varadkar TD in advance of the forthcoming European Transport, Telecommunications and Energy Council Meeting. The address to the Committee by the Minister will precede the meeting with representatives from the Save Moore Street Group.

This meeting will take place on Wednesday, 21st March, in Committee Room 4, Leinster House 2000 at 10:30 a.m.

Committee proceedings can be followed live here.
