Agriculture Committee to meet Chief Veterinary Officer

26 Márta 2012, 17:09

The Joint Committee on Communications, Natural Resources and Agriculture will tomorrow meet with Chief Veterinary Officer at the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Martin Blake. The meeting will focus on animal health issues and disease control.

Chairman of the Oireachtas Joint Committee Andrew Doyle TD said: “The prosperity of the food industry, worth up to €10 billion annually, is directly related to the safety of the food we are producing. Indeed, animal health, animal welfare and farm profitability are fundamentally interlinked and of equal importance.

“Building on an earlier meeting this year with Animal Health Ireland, tomorrow’s meeting with the Chief Veterinary Officer will afford the Committee an insight into how Ireland’s enviable record on animal disease control is being safeguarded. Of particular interest to the Committee will be the incidence of highly contagious bovine Tuberculosis, and the precautions put in place by the Department to curb the disease.\"

The meeting will be held tomorrow Tuesday 27 March in Committee Room 3, Leinster House 2000, at 2.00 p.m.

Committee proceedings can be followed live here.
