Committee on Jobs, Social Protection and Education to discuss education supports and Traveller education

27 Márta 2012, 13:47

Officials from the Departments of Children and Youth Affairs and Education and Skills will attend the meeting of the Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Social Protection and Education tomorrow, 28th March, to discuss issues in relation to education support and traveller education.

Officials from the Department of Education and Skills will provide a briefing on traveller education, while the Department of Children and Youth Affairs will update the Committee on supports for community and youth projects that provide both formal and informal education services, particularly in disadvantaged areas.

Chairman of the Committee Deputy Damien English said: “Tomorrow, we will receive briefings on a number of education matters from two Government Departments. The Department of Education and Skills will update the Committee on all aspects of Traveller Education from pre-school right through to further and higher education within a lifelong learning context.

As well as Department policy in this area, we will also discuss the Traveller Implementation Group, the Traveller Education Advisory & Consultative Forum and progress on the Implementation of the Recommendations in the Report and Recommendations for a Traveller Education Strategy which was launched in 2006.

Department of Children and Youth Affairs officials will provide details on supports for community and youth projects, including the Prevention and Early Intervention Programme for Children; the Educational Welfare Service; the School Completion Programme; the Home School Community Liaison.

We are looking forward to engaging with officials from both Government Departments on these very important issues. Members will have a chance to examine Department policy in two areas that deal with some of the more marginalised children and students in society and discuss the challenges and issues that each Department is encountering in addressing education supports and Traveller education.”

This meeting will start at 9.30am on Wednesday, 28th March in Committee Room 3, Leinster House 2000.
