Jobs Committee to continue hearings on unemployment

24 Aib 2012, 16:39

The Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Social Protection will continue its hearings on unemployment and youth unemployment when it meets with representatives from the Irish National Organisation of the Unemployed, the National Youth Council of Ireland, Dublin City Council and the Ballyfermot – Chapelizod Partnership.

At its first session at 9.45am, the Committee will meet with John Stewart from the Irish National Organisation of the Unemployed (INOU) and James Doorly from the National Youth Council of Ireland.

Seán Moloney, Assistant Area Officer, Dublin City Council and Ciaran Reid, Manager, Ballyfermot – Chapelizod Partnership will follow with presentations at approximately 11am.

Chairman of the Committee Deputy Damien English said: “As part of the on-going consideration of unemployment, particularly youth unemployment, the Committee will be meeting with a number of interest groups and organisations working closely with unemployed people and involved in job creation initiatives.

Unemployment is the single biggest issue facing our country today. Committee members are aware that politicians do not have a monopoly on ideas on how to deal with unemployment or to create jobs.  That is why we are looking forward to meeting with groups who are dealing with these issues on a day-to-day basis so that we can get their perspectives on the problems people face and to hear their suggestions on what further initiatives can be taken to tackle the problem. Their contributions will help inform the report that the Committee is preparing on the issue which we hope will put forward clear, innovative and actionable steps that will make a difference.

It is important that we as a committee continue to play our part in contributing to achieving progress and finding new potential solutions which integrate social protection, education and job creation measures targeted to achieve the best results of getting people back to work.”

This meeting will take place in Committee Room 2, Leinster House at 9.30am on Wednesday 25th April.
