Foreign Affairs Committee to discuss humanitarian crisis in South Kordofan and South Sudan with Trócaire and Médecins Sans Frontieres

25 MFómh 2012, 17:33

Trócaire and Médicins Sans Frontieres will brief the Joint Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade on the humanitarian crisis in South Kordofan and South Sudan at its meeting tomorrow, Wednesday, 26th September.

Committee Chairman, Pat Breen TD said: “Our Committee is deeply concerned at the increasing tensions between and within Sudan and South Sudan, particularly the conflict in South Kordofan and the situation in the Nuba Mountains.

Ireland’s response to the deteriorating situation and the humanitarian crisis in the region has been acknowledged as one of the more committed. However, greater action and financial assistance is required from the international community. At our meeting tomorrow with representatives from Trócaire and Médicins Sans Frontieres, we will be able to get an up to date assessment of the nature of the crisis and establish what extra measures Ireland and Europe could take to help avert a catastrophe.”

This meeting will start in Committee Room 1, Leinster House at 2.30pm on Wednesday, 26th September 2012.
