Justice Committee has constructive meeting with Selection Panel for Irish Human Rights and Equality Commission

25 MFómh 2012, 18:35

The Joint Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality held a positive and constructive meeting with the selection panel for the proposed new Irish Human Rights and Equality Commission.

The panel will select members for the new Irish Human Rights and Equality Commission which will replace the Equality Authority and the Human Rights Commission.

Committee Chairman David Stanton, TD, said: “The appointment to the panel has been publicly considered by our Committee. The meeting was an opportunity for members of the Committee to engage with the selection panel to discuss their relevant experience and expertise. In the course of a very positive and constructive meeting, the committee was satisfied with the calibre of those appointed to the Selection Panel.

In particular, the Committee acknowledged the fact that the Panel “stood aside” in order that any concerns regarding their appointment was addressed.  In the opinion of the Committee, this act demonstrated the Panel’s recognition of the importance that it be viewed as completely independent and transparent body.

The Panel Members briefly commented on various possible approaches which may be used in selecting the new Irish Human Rights and Equality Commission.

The Committee stated that it recognised the commitment of the Selection Panel to the important task which it is to undertake and invited the Panel to commence its work and wished it every success with this task.”
