Oireachtas Committee to visit Ulster Canal, Enniskillen and Clones

26 MFómh 2012, 17:34

A delegation of the Joint Committee on the Implementation of the Good Friday Agreement will tomorrow visit the Ulster Canal, Enniskillen and Clones for a wide range of meetings with Waterways Ireland officials, local councillors and community groups.

26 September 2012

Committee Vice-Chairman Joe O'Reilly TD says: “Reflecting the aims of the Good Friday Agreement, our Committee is working to explore all practical ways towards cooperation and reconciliation. The visit tomorrow provides our Committee with the opportunity to view firsthand the work of Waterways Ireland, the largest of the North South Implementation Bodies established under the agreement.

“The restoration of the Ulster Canal is an important component of Waterways Ireland’s work and, later in the day, the Committee will be visit the disused canal near Clones. Representatives from the Clones Regeneration Partnership will deliver a briefing to the delegation.  The Ulster Canal project is a practical example of a North South co-operation project which has the potential to bring considerable benefits to rural communities in counties which have suffered from a lack of tourist infrastructure in the past.”

“The Committee also looks forward to meeting a cross section of local District Council representatives at Enniskillen Town Hall. Following on from previous engagement with women’s, community and victims' groups in Leinster House and on visits to Northern Ireland and the border region, the delegation will meet with the Fermanagh Women’s Aid organisation, the ARC Healthy Living Centre, the Fermanagh Churches Forum and the Sliabh Beagh Cross-Border Partnership.”
