Jobs Committee to hear from IBEC and SFA on unemployment and budget measures

1 DFómh 2012, 17:22

The Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation will meet with representatives from the Irish Business and Employers’ Confederation (IBEC) and the Small Firms Association (SFA) tomorrow, Tuesday, 2nd October to discuss unemployment and youth unemployment. The two employers’ organisations will also discuss their pre-budget submissions with the Committee.

Chairman of the Committee Deputy Damien English said: “As the Committee begins the process of preparing a report on the issue of unemployment, particularly youth unemployment, we are looking forward to the contributions from IBEC and the SFA. It will give us a chance to get the perspectives of both employers’ organisations on the problem of unemployment and consider the measures and initiatives they would like to see introduced which could help address the issue.

As part of the on-going consideration of unemployment, particularly youth unemployment, this Committee has undertaken an intensive series of meeting with interest groups and organisations working with unemployed people as well as employers, business people and organisations involved in job creation. All contributions will help inform the report that the Committee is preparing on the issue which we hope will put forward clear, innovative and actionable steps that will make a difference.

Tomorrow’s meeting will also provide us with an opportunity to get IBEC’s and the SFA’s views on the budgetary challenges facing the State and discuss the measures they would like to see introduced in the budget which would benefit business generation and expansion and job creation.”

The Committee will also hear from the Minister of State for Research and Innovation Sean Sherlock, TD on the forthcoming EU COMPET Council meeting.

Deputy English said: “Our Committee will engage with Minister of State Sherlock on the approach he proposes to take at the forthcoming EU COMPET Council meeting.”

This meeting will begin at 1.30pm in Committee Room 2, Leinster House on Tuesday, 2nd October.
