Committee Chairman welcomes clarity on A5 road development

5 DFómh 2012, 12:27

The Chairman of the Joint Committee on the Implementation of the Good Friday Agreement Joe McHugh TD has welcomed clarity provided this week by the Government on funding for the A5 road project in the medium term.

5 October 2012

Earlier this week, Deputy McHugh asked the Government for an update on the commitment to progressing the co-funded A5 road project. The Minister for Transport, Tourism & Sport Leo Varadkar TD, reflecting on a decision at last November’s North South Ministerial Council, re-affirmed this week that the Irish Government will allocate £25m per annum in 2015 and 2016 towards the project.

Committee Chairman Joe McHugh TD says: “Reflecting the aims of the Good Friday Agreement, our Committee is working to explore all practical ways towards cooperation and reconciliation. Minister Varadkar this week restated the Government’s commitment to this infrastructural project in the medium term, the delivery of which will bring significant benefits for the citizens of the northwest.

“Delivery of the A5 road project is a priority issue for our Committee. At a meeting on 13 September, we brought councillors from both sides of the border together in public for the first time to discuss the delivery of this vital piece of road network which will benefit citizens in a number of counties on both sides of the border. As a Committee, we will continue to explore all potential funding avenues for delivery of a dual carriageway link to the northwest by 2020, through political dialogue in Dublin, Belfast, London and Brussels.”
