EU Affairs Committee to meet Canadian parliamentary delegation

8 DFómh 2012, 15:45

The Oireachtas Joint Committee on European Union Affairs tomorrow meets with a delegation from the Canada-Europe Parliamentary Association to discuss Ireland’s forthcoming Presidency of the European Union from January to June 2013.

8 October 2012

The Association aims to provide a structured forum for the exchange of information and ideas between Canadian parliamentarians and members of individual parliaments of all countries of Europe, as well as the European institutions. The cross party delegation, comprising MPs and Senators, will be led by David Tilson, MP.

Chairman of the Committee Dominic Hannigan TD said: “With Ireland’s Presidency of the European Union fast approaching, this is a timely opportunity to engage with our Canadian counterparts on the priorities for this crucial six month period for Ireland and the wider European Union.

“Like Ireland, Canada is highly dependent on international trade for its economic well-being. Canada has, however, weathered the recent economic storm much better than Ireland, partly due to a well regulated financial sector. Tomorrow’s engagement with our Canadian counterparts offers us an opportunity to exchange ideas with parliamentarians from one of the most successful developed economies in recent years.”

“Ireland proposes to focus on the issues that are of greatest concern to citizens across the EU during the six month Presidency.  The overriding priority of the Presidency across all policy areas will be stimulating sustainable economic growth and promoting job creation. This Committee hopes to lead in the engagement of the Houses of the Oireachtas in creating a vibrant parliamentary dimension to the Presidency, particularly in contributing to policy which fosters growth and curbs unemployment rates. Tomorrow's meeting is an important step in preparing for this upcoming work.”

The meeting takes place tomorrow Tuesday 9 October at 2 p.m. in Committee Room 1, Leinster House 2000.
