Foreign Affairs Committee to meet Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Iran

9 DFómh 2012, 17:55

Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Iran Hossein Panahazia has accepted the invitation of the Joint Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade to appear before it tomorrow, Wednesday 10th October 2012 to discuss a number of matters of common interest between Ireland and Iran.

Committee Chairman, Pat Breen TD said: “Our meeting tomorrow with Ambassador Panahaziar will also provide us with an opportunity to consider a number of issues of common interest between our two countries.  Many members of the Oireachtas and the Irish public continue to take a keen interest in the Middle East and we will be particularly keen to discuss concerns in the West over possible military dimensions to Iran’s nuclear programme.

“We will also raise the protection and promotion of human rights in Iran, including the rights of the adherents to the Baha’i faith, the largest unrecognised religious minority in Iran. We will also address reports of anti-Semitic comments by the First Vice President of Iran and the situation with the People’s Mojahedin and Camap Ashraf.

“The Committee will also have an opportunity to consider trade issues with Ambassador Panahaziar.

“We are looking forward to a positive and open meeting with the Ambassador and this opportunity to have a discussion on a wide range of matters of interest to both our countries.”

This meeting will start in Committee Room 1, Leinster House at 2.30pm on Wednesday, 10th October 2012.
