Jobs Committee to discuss US FDI with American Chamber of Commerce

15 DFómh 2012, 15:27

The Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation will meet with Peter O'Neill, President, American Chamber of Commerce Ireland, tomorrow, Tuesday, 16th October, 2012 to discuss the findings of recent report The Irish-US Economic Relationship 2012.

Chairman of the Committee Deputy Damien English said: “The report, commissioned by the American Chamber of Commerce Ireland and written by Joseph P Quinlan, found that US foreign direct investment (FDI) continues to play a vital role in Ireland. The latest figures from its report show that US investment in Ireland soared by nearly 20% in 2011, rising to $188 billion. US investment here now is five times greater than it was just 10 years ago.  The report also found that US FDI flows to Ireland in the half of 2012 were in excess of $14 billion again larger than the total US investment in the developing countries of Asia and many other key emerging markets.

The report underlines the importance, both economically and socially, of Ireland’s relationship with the United States. Tomorrow, we will have an opportunity to consider the report in-depth and also to discuss with representatives from the chamber the measures and initiatives they feel would strengthen that relationship and bolster Ireland’s reputation and attraction as an investment location and international business centre.”

Before the meeting with the American Chamber of Commerce Ireland, the Committee will undertake a scrutiny of EU legislative proposals: COM(2011)778 and COM(2011)779 with officials from the Department of Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation.

This meeting will begin at 1.30pm in Committee Room 2, Leinster House on Tuesday, 16th October.
