Oireachtas Environment Committee to discuss building regulations

15 DFómh 2012, 15:56

Maintaining and enforcing regulations in the building sector will be the focus of the Oireachtas Joint Committee on Environment, Culture and the Gaeltacht when it meets with representatives of the Building Regulations Advisory Board tomorrow, Tuesday 16th October, 2012.

Vice Chair of the Oireachtas Committee on the Environment, Culture and the Gaeltacht, Noel Coonan, TD said: “There have been a number of high profile failures in the housing sector which have put the State’s role in maintaining and enforcing building regulations in the spotlight. While the Building Regulations Advisory Board has no executive responsibilities, its role is to advise the Minister on matters relating to the building regulations. Our meeting will enable us to get an outline on the statutory framework for building control which is currently in place, while the Building Regulations Advisory Board will also update the committee on the necessary steps now being undertaken to strengthen the system including, in particular, mandatory certification and more meaningful oversight of construction activity by professionals and local authorities.”

This meeting will take place in Committee Room 4, Leinster House at 2.15pm tomorrow, Tuesday, 16th October 2012. Before the meeting with the Building Regulations Advisory Board, the Committee will elect a new cathaoirleach.
